‘Hair,’ ‘Everwood’ actor Treat Williams dies after Vermont motorcycle crash

Prominent actor Richard Treat Williams, recognized for pivotal roles in TV show “Everwood” and the film “Hair”, tragically lost his life at age 71 in a Vermont motorcycle accident, as confirmed by local law enforcement.

The incident happened just before 5 p.m. on Monday when a Honda SUV, turning left into a parking lot, collided with Williams’ motorcycle in the town of Dorset, as detailed in a Vermont State Police statement.

The impact threw Williams off his bike, inflicting severe injuries. The actor was rushed to Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York, via helicopter, where he was later pronounced dead. Police reported that Williams had been wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

The driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries but did not require hospitalization. Despite signaling the turn prior to the collision, the driver has not been detained as the accident investigation is ongoing.

Living in southern Vermont’s Manchester Center, the actor whose complete name was Richard Treat Williams, had his death confirmed by his agent, Barry McPherson.

Expressing deep sadness, McPherson told People magazine, “He was the nicest guy. He was so talented.” McPherson further described Williams as an actor loved by filmmakers and who had been a significant figure in Hollywood since the late 70s.

Williams, born in Connecticut, kicked off his career in 1975 with the film “Deadly Hero”, playing a police officer. He had a prolific career with over 120 appearances in TV and film, which included movies like “The Eagle Has Landed,” “Prince of the City,” and “Once Upon a Time in America.”

In 1979, he earned a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of the hippie leader George Berger in the movie adaptation of the successful musical “Hair”. Though he featured in numerous television series, he is perhaps best remembered for his lead role as Dr. Andrew Brown in “Everwood” from 2002 to 2006, and his recurring role in “Blue Bloods” as Lenny Ross. Besides his screen roles, Williams was also known for his stage performances in Broadway productions like “Grease” and “Pirates of Penzance”.

His friends and colleagues remembered Williams as a kind, generous, and creative individual. Actor James Woods, who worked with him on “Once Upon a Time in America”, expressed his heartache on Twitter. Writer, director, and producer Justine Williams also shared her grief and appreciation for Williams’ friendship. Actor Wendell Pierce described Williams as a passionate, adventurous, and creative man, generously sharing advice and support.
