Football by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 86 Football (also known as association football, soccer, or futbol) is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players each with the objective to score goals by kicking a round ball into the opposing team’s goal. It is considered one of the world’s most popular sports and has been estimated that over 250 million people play it in over 200 countries worldwide. The game dates back centuries ago when similar games were played in different cultures on various continents such as Europe, Asia and South America. The modern rules of football developed in England during the 19th century and are based on those used today at many levels across all six FIFA continental confederations: CONCACAF (North & Central America), AFC (Asia), CAF (Africa), CONMEBOL (South America), OFC(Oceania) and UEFA(Europe). Teams can compete either locally or internationally depending upon their level of competition ranging from amateur leagues up to professional clubs competing for major tournaments like World Cup finals held every four years under supervision by FIFA – Fédération Internationale de Football Association–the governing body for international football associations around the globe. Though there are variations among how different nations may play according to unique local regulations set forth from respective national federations, some aspects remain consistent throughout; namely two halves comprising forty five minutes each with an additional fifteen minute break period after halftime before resuming play again until ninety total minutes have elapsed whereupon scoring opportunities arise via penalty kicks if necessary should no clear winner emerge through regulation time alone. Tactics employed involve passing schemes along with direct shots towards goal using varying methods including headers off corner kicks taken near opponents’ net while trying simultaneously defending against opponent’s attempts at doing same thus creating exciting encounters amongst fans watching both live stadiums full capacity crowds well television broadcast networks covering events globally.
