Notre Dame Transfer QB Jack Buchner Commits to Alabama and Rees

On Thursday, Tyler Buchner announced that he will be transferring to Alabama. He’s going to be joining Tommy Rees, who used to coach at Notre Dame.

In a post on Twitter, Tyler said that he was really excited about this new opportunity. He also said that he had committed to play football for the University of Alabama and their head coach Nick Saban.

Buchner is starting his third year of college, but last season he got hurt during a game against Marshall. He was out for the rest of the regular season, but came back to help lead Notre Dame to victory in the Gator Bowl match against South Carolina. Buchner has been with the Irish for two years now and has thrown 6 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, and run for 7 scores and 459 yards.

Earlier this year, Rees recruited Buchner to come join his former school, Alabama. Last week was the end of spring practice at Alabama, and there is still no definite leader out of four quarterbacks in line: a third-year player Jalen Milroe, a redshirt freshman Ty Simpson and two freshmen. All these people are searching for someone to take over for Bryce Young who won a Heisman Trophy and is supposed to be one of the top picks in Thursday’s NFL draft.

Milroe is the only quarterback in Alabama with experience playing in an actual game. Last season, he played most of one game and even started another after Young got hurt during a match against Arkansas. Milroe threw 5 touchdowns and 3 interceptions while completing over half his passes and ran for 4 touchdown, including 3 points won in a victory against Texas A&M.

In 2015, an old quarterback named Jacob Coker transferred to Alabama and then helped them win a national championship. After that, the Tide’s starting quarterbacks have been Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, Mac Jones and Young.

Right now at Notre Dame, Sam Hartman (who had 3 seasons as a starter and 110 passes) is competing in his sixth year playing football.

Coach Marcus Freeman didn’t decide who will start after spring practice. Buchner, on the other hand, said that he wanted to come back to Notre Dame and this was possible. He then decided to play with Rees instead who has been associated with Notre Dame as quarterback for six seasons and later played an important role in offense from 2020 till 2022.

Buchner is the second quarterback from Notre Dame to transfer away since last year ended. Drew Pyne moved to Arizona State.
