Lando NorrisSportsSports - Europe Formula One Authority Denies McLaren’s Appeal Over Lando Norris Penalty at the Canadian Grand Prix by Madison Thomas July 2, 2023 written by Madison Thomas July 2, 2023 6 comments Bookmark 57 The overseeing body of Formula One has dismissed McLaren’s appeal for the reconsideration of the time penalty imposed on Lando Norris during the Canadian Grand Prix. The penalty led to a drop in Norris’s ranking from ninth to 13th due to accusations of intentionally slow driving. The decision was announced following an appeal hearing on Sunday, prior to the Austrian Grand Prix, where two representatives from the McLaren team were present. The denial was based on the fact that McLaren did not present any new substantial evidence that was not already available at the time of the incident. A reconsideration hearing could only have been called if there was significant new evidence. Norris was given a five-second penalty in the Montreal race for what was termed as “unsportsmanlike behavior” by the stewards. IN OTHER NEWS FIA Consents to McLaren’s Application to Reconsider Norris Penalty During the race, a safety car was deployed following a crash by Mercedes’ driver, George Russell, which scattered debris on the track. In response, McLaren instructed its drivers, Oscar Piastri and Norris, to change tires. The stewards then accused Norris of intentionally driving slowly behind the safety car to provide McLaren with a strategic advantage during the tire changes. The time penalty resulted in Norris losing two points as he was demoted from ninth place. McLaren stated on Sunday, “We are of the belief that we submitted enough new and significant evidence to justify a ‘right to review’.” Accepting the stewards’ decision, they further added, “Though the result wasn’t what we were hoping for, we are grateful to the stewards for their time and cooperation.” For more AP auto racing news, visit https://bigbignews.net/auto-racing and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports.
