Fourth of July traditions

The Fourth of July embodies the very essence of Americana, with festivities that encompass parades, barbecues, chilled beer and, of course, the spectacular display of fireworks.

However, the grandeur of these fireworks often comes with an alarming risk, leading to over 10,000 emergency room visits on average each year. Despite the danger, fireworks continue to be an intrinsic part of the 247-year-old Independence Day celebrations.

Here, we delve into five significant aspects of the Fourth of July, including its origins and how fireworks became an integral part of this holiday’s traditions.

WHAT’S THE BACKSTORY OF INDEPENDENCE DAY?

Independence Day commemorates the unanimous adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, marking the colonies’ breakaway from Great Britain.

The Library of Congress notes that the first anniversary of this event sparked spontaneous celebrations in Philadelphia, however, widespread observance of the holiday across the country only materialized after the War of 1812. Historical events like the groundbreaking ceremonies for the Erie Canal and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad were subsequently scheduled to coincide with Fourth of July festivities.

WHY ARE FIREWORKS SYNONYMOUS WITH THE FOURTH OF JULY?

Fireworks have been integral to Independence Day right from the beginning. Founding Father John Adams foresaw this, suggesting in a letter to his wife Abigail on July 3, 1776, that the occasion be marked with grandeur and celebrations across the continent, including fireworks, or ‘Illuminations.’

Although fireworks predate America’s inception by centuries, their use became popular in religious and public events in Europe by the 15th century. Early U.S. settlers perpetuated these customs, according to the American Pyrotechnics Association.

HAS ANY PRESIDENT EVER OPTED OUT OF CELEBRATIONS?

All American Presidents, from George Washington to Joe Biden, have celebrated Independence Day, with the notable exception of John Adams. He believed July 2, the day the Continental Congress voted for independence, to be the real Independence Day, and hence refused to partake in celebrations on July 4. His belief was so firm that he declined invitations to events, even during his presidential tenure.

HOW POPULAR ARE FIREWORKS?

Over the past two decades, consumer fireworks sales have skyrocketed. In 2000, American consumers spent $407 million on fireworks, a figure that rose to $2.3 billion by 2022, with the most significant increase occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic when public fireworks displays were canceled.

Fireworks sales are expected to rise by another $100 million this year, facilitated by the Fourth of July falling on a Tuesday, thereby extending the holiday into a four-day weekend.

ARE FIREWORKS HAZARDOUS?

Despite numerous safety campaigns, thousands of Americans sustain serious injuries from fireworks annually. In 2022 alone, fireworks accounted for 10,200 emergency room visits and 11 fatalities. Three-quarters of these incidents occurred around the Fourth of July.

Dr. Tiffany Osborn, an emergency room physician at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, urges safety and recommends alternatives for small children, like glow sticks or colorful streamers. For those planning on using fireworks, precautions
