Vladimir Putin by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 101 Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin (born 7 October 1952) is a Russian politician who has been the President of Russia since 2012, previously holding the position from 1999 until 2008. He was also Prime Minister of Russia from 1999 to 2000 and again from 2008 to 2012. During his first presidency, he oversaw economic growth in excess of seven percent per year, as well as restoration of political stability and increased foreign investment. Putin grew up in Leningrad during Soviet times; his mother worked at a factory while his father served in World War II and later worked for the city’s KGB office. After graduating with honors from law school at Leningrad State University, Putin joined the KGB forces where he became an officer stationed mainly in East Germany before returning home after its collapse. After resigning himself as an intelligence officer, Putin held several political positions within St Petersburg’s government between 1990-1996 prior to joining Moscow’s administration under Boris Yeltsin’s presidency in 1996; eventually becoming Prime Minister by August 1999 following Yeltsin’s resignation He won election that same year campaigning on promises to restore order amidst crime waves across Russia via strong central authority rule .
