It is located on the Gulf Coast of southeastern Texas, approximately 160 miles (260 km) east of Austin. Houston’s economy includes corporate headquarters for many large companies such as ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, Sysco Corporation, Phillips 66 Company and Chevron Phillips Chemical Co LP. The Port of Houston ranks first nationally in international waterborne tonnage handled and second overall among ports nationwide by total cargo volume. The city was founded in 1836 by brothers Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen on land near Buffalo Bayou owned by Sam Houston—for whom it was named—and incorporated as a city with no municipal government on June 5th 1837; after its annexation to Harris County it became known as “the City of Houston”. With an estimated population approaching 3 million people, it serves as both cultural hub for Greater Houston metropolitan area – one of America’s largest cities – which contains 6 million residents spread over more than 10 counties making up almost half of Texas’ total population size today.
