Summer Blockbusters: Get Ready for Indy, Barbie, and ‘Fast X’

In the summer movie season, when loads of popular movies come out, things can get really competitive. On July 21st though, there’s an extra special event! That day, you will have to decide which movie to watch – ‘Oppenheimer’ by Christopher Nolan or ‘Barbie’ by Greta Gerwig? It’ll be a tough call…

Talking about the “Barbieheimer” showdown is silly. It’s totally doable to watch two different movies in one weekend. Also, a really successful movie does not have to start with a great opening weekend – like what happened to the movie “The Dark Knight” and “Mamma Mia”. Both movies became really big hits even though they opened on the same day back in 2008.

People have been joking, betting and making memes about the upcoming beach-off which has made a lot of buzz on the web. In April, some people even thought it was cancelled but everything is alright now. The Highlander jokes are not about any bad box office report from 1986 but more to do with the famous quote of “there can only be one”.

The summer movie season is already here! It starts on May 5th with the release of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and ends on Labor Day. This season is important for movie makers, because usually it makes around 40% of an entire year’s ticket sales, which adds up to be over $4 billion dollars (last year was about $3.4 billion). So you don’t want to miss out on this exciting time in the movies!

Many in the film industry are very hopeful. Last summer there were only 22 films released showing in over 2,000 movie theaters. But this year, 42 movies are coming out covering all kinds of genres and each studio is focusing on releasing them to theaters rather than streaming them directly online.

This summer there will be movies, toys, racing games and theme park rides that all have something to offer. Action-packed adventures, family-friendly amusement, documentaries, even a star-studded movie are all featured! Visit the link below for details on what you can find this summer. Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid,” starring Halle Bailey, will be shown in awesome 3D IMAX, laser and Dolby versions when it releases on theaters this May 26th. What makes it pretty cool is that the director, Rob Marshall, had to pull a lot of strings to make this underwater movie with photorealistic visuals happen.

Marshall started working on his project in 2018. He did not want the technical side of it to overshadow the story or characters, and he was sure that “The Little Mermaid” would be a big theater release by 2023, after the pandemic is over and more people return to cinemas.

For the past 30 years, Nicole Holofcener has been making indie movies that usually get pretty small releases. But this time, A24 (a studio) said they wanted her new movie “You Hurt My Feelings” to have a big release on Memorial Day weekend, which was surprising!

Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s new movie was really popular when it was shown at the Sundance Film Festival this year. It is a New York based comedy about what happens in a relationship when Julia’s character finds out that her therapist husband (Tobias Menzies) doesn’t like her book.

“The company A24 thinks that my movie can be seen by a lot of people, not just the regular indie crowd,” Holofcener said. “I’m excited, but also kind of worried. It’s safe when you release a movie in only 6 theaters at once.”

A24 is giving a lot of people the chance to watch Celine Song’s movie called ‘Past Lives’ that stars Greta Lee. It’ll come out on June 2 – so make sure to look for it!

During the summertime, big budget movies like “Fast X” – which is one of the six billion-dollar established series led by Vin Diesel – are common. However, there have been issues with this movie even though it had a great start. Surprisingly, Justin Lin – who’s part of the franchise – decided to step away from directing while they were still filming.

Louis Leterrier, a French movie director, had wanted to direct a “Fast” film for a long time but never thought he’d get the chance. That is until one day he got an unexpected phone call late at night – 2 AM!

He read the script twice, then talked to producers at 6 in the morning and got on a plane to London later that day. He had to find a way to fix the chaos of “Fast X” since they lost their director and location. After a week, he managed to get everything back on track and then agreed to work on the 11th as well.

“The latest ‘Fast and Furious’ movie is special – it’s going to be like nothing you’ve seen before,” Leterrier said. “We’re changing some of the characters and story, so we’ll have to say goodbye to some people we love. Jason Momoa’s character adds even more excitement by adding chaos.”

This summer is seeing a lot of comedies in theaters, like “No Hard Feelings,” “About My Father,” and two others: “Strays” and “Joy Ride.” The last one was produced by Seth Rogen and is about four Asian American friends going on an adventure in China. It’s getting really good reviews so far, with a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of its June 23 release.

Rogen said it’s not common now to make wild, R-rated films that can make big crowds laugh. Some say that R-Rated comedies don’t take the risks they used to, but he suggests you should go watch this movie and prove them wrong!

Seth Rogen is the person behind an upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated movie called “Mutant Mayhem” which releases on August 4th. He was taking care of the entire project from the start as a producer, co-writer, voice actor and he even loves those cartoon turtles!

Several years ago, he wrote a joke about how the coolest thing about the mutant ninja turtles was that they were teenagers. This thought stuck in his head and eventually he made this movie that ties action-adventure with growing up. The animation was even inspired by drawings made in school notebooks.

Seth Rogen will star in the movie as Bebop and has called a bunch of other famous actors to be part of the cast. For example, Ice Cube is Superfly, Ayo Edebiri is April, Paul Rudd is Mondo Gecko, Rose Byrne is Leatherhead and Jackie Chan plays Master Splinter.

Furthermore, Rogen said that it was really cool to perform recordings with groups of up to eight people at one time because it gave the scenes much more liveliness and energy!

He’s also seen the attention of different organizations, like Hollywood, turning back to going to the cinema.

Rogen said “Going to the theatre is special and makes movies more valuable than watching them through streaming services.”
