Born in London, Birkin captivated France with her musical talents and her romantic relationship with French singer Serge Gainsbourg. Together, they created captivating songs, most notably the passionate and controversial “Je t’aime moi non plus” (“I Love You, Me Neither”), where Birkin’s ethereal, British-accented vocals intertwined with Gainsbourg’s gruff baritone.

Birkin’s iconic style during the 1960s and early 1970s, characterized by long hair with bangs, jeans paired with white tops, knit mini dresses, and basket bags, continues to epitomize French chic for women across the globe.

Not only celebrated for her artistic endeavors, Birkin was also known for her activism. In 2022, she joined fellow actors and musicians in France to support protesters in Iran by participating in the “HairForFreedom” campaign. Despite Birkin and Gainsbourg separating in 1980, she remained his muse throughout her life. She also had a daughter named Kate with renowned James Bond composer John Barry, who sadly passed away in 2013 at the age of 46. Birkin’s third daughter, singer and model Lou Doillon, was born during her relationship with French director Jacques Doillon.

According to reports from French newspaper Le Figaro, Birkin had faced health issues in recent years, which limited her performances and public appearances. In 2021, she suffered a mild stroke, resulting in the cancellation of her shows that year. Furthermore, she had to cancel her shows in March due to a broken shoulder blade.

Despite her setbacks, Birkin had expressed her intention to return to the stage in May but ultimately postponed her comeback, stating that she needed additional time. She reassured her devoted fans that she would reunite with them in the upcoming fall.
