Commanders Reach Agreement with Washington, D.C., on Ticket Deposits: What You Need to Know

The Washington Commanders and the District of Columbia’s Attorney General have reached an agreement that will return $200,000 to fans who made deposits and pay $425,000 to the district. This is being done because the previous Attorney General filed a lawsuit mentioning issues around deposits. The current Attorney General took over this case.

The district looked deeper into it and found out that the team was being dishonest with its fans. They would keep money from people even after they should have had it back, and in some cases made it very hard to get the money back.

“The Commanders did something wrong by not being honest and open with their ticket sales, taking advantage of the fans instead. This settlement means that the office in charge will be closely watching to make sure the Commanders do what they should to give the fans back their money,” Schwalb said.

The district is still in the middle of a lawsuit against the football team owners, Dan Snyder and the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, after they were accused of lying to people about the terrible conditions in the workplace. As a result, the league gave them a $10 million fine but refused to issue a full report which caused many people to be angry and start an investigation by Congress.

The Commanders made an agreement with Maryland about season-ticket holders deposits. The agreement said that the Commanders will return their money and also pay Maryland $250,000. They must look for contact information of those affected by this deal, tell people how to get refunds on their website, and update the attorney general’s office with how they are doing this process.

The Commanders spokesperson said that they stopped taking security deposits or seat licenses more than ten years ago, and since 2014 they have been trying to return any deposits that are still out there. The Commanders also said that they worked together with the D.C attorney general to reach an agreement on this matter, so now they can fulfill their promise to fans.

Recently, in Washington, lots of cases were filed against the local football team’s owner. The owner and his wife decided to hire a company to try and sell all or part of the team. This came right after many investigations had taken place AND two weeks after the owner of another football team made a suggestion that it was time for this owner to leave.

Josh Harris and Mitchell Rales, both supported by Magic Johnson, as well as Canadian billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos, have all made plans to buy the Commanders. It is uncertain when this deal may be closed because Mr. Snyder has to pick one of them and send it off for approval.
