Supporters of Israel rally in Washington under heavy security, crying ‘never again’

The purpose of the rally in Washington was to show support for Israel, denounce Hamas, and express solidarity in the fight against terrorism.

The event was designated as a “level 1” security event by the Homeland Security Department due to the need for substantial law enforcement assistance from federal agencies, given its significance and potential security concerns.

Several speakers, including Israeli President Isaac Herzog, addressed the crowd, denouncing Hamas and the spread of antisemitism. President Herzog spoke via video and emphasized the importance of unity.

The rally was prompted by Hamas’ incursion on October 7, which resulted in a significant loss of life. The speakers also discussed the spread of antisemitism globally and expressed concern about the conflict’s impact on civilians in Israel and Gaza.

While the FBI and Homeland Security issued a joint bulletin warning of the potential for violence or attacks inspired by the Israel-Hamas war, no specific, actionable threat to the rally was identified by federal officials.

Security measures included the use of dump trucks to block access to the National Mall, a significant police presence, and officers on horseback to maintain order and protect participants.

Many participants displayed Israeli flags and expressed solidarity with Israel. Some also expressed concern about the well-being of hostages and civilians affected by the conflict, while others defended Israel’s actions in response to the incursion.

Hamas’ incursion resulted in more than 1,200 deaths and over 200 hostages taken. Israel’s response in Gaza led to the deaths of more than 11,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry.

The rally took place amid growing condemnation of the conflict worldwide, leading to increased anti-Israel sentiment. President Joe Biden had initially expressed solidarity with Israel but later urged moderation in Israeli tactics to reduce civilian suffering in Gaza.
