Celebrating Pride and Juneteenth Together: A Refuge for Black LGBTQ+ Individuals

Naomi Green experienced a vibrant weekend in Dallas, attending events that beautifully intertwined the celebrations of Juneteenth and Pride. From engaging in a health equity forum to striking poses on a pedestrian bridge, accompanied by the infectious beats of a DJ set, Green found herself immersed in a community that recognized and celebrated both her Blackness and LGBTQ+ identity.

Green shared her thoughts on the significance of these gatherings, stating, “Sometimes I think the Black community forgets that LGBTQ people are still Black as well. And so we have the opportunity to really celebrate both of those at the same time because just because we’re LGBTQ doesn’t remove our Blackness. We’re both.”

During the month of June, when Pride month honors the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals, various groups have discovered ways to merge these festivities with Juneteenth, America’s newest federal holiday. Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, when enslaved individuals in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom. No one is there to really judge you.”

In Denver, Black Pride Colorado, a program of Youth Seen dedicated to providing mental health and wellness services for Black LGBTQI individuals, organized a lineup of Pride events, including a screening of “Black Panther” at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Juneteenth. The event, which featured a drag performance, marked the first time the group celebrated Juneteenth. tara jae, the founder and executive director of Youth Seen, expresses the significance of these events as places to “have fellowship and just really be seen.”

Dallas Southern Pride originated in 1997 when LGBTQ+ community members felt a lack of inclusivity in the celebrations surrounding the annual football matchup of two historically Black universities in Dallas. Ahmad Goree explains that back then, there were no safe spaces for these community members to gather and enjoy themselves. To address this, parties were organized for LGBTQ+ individuals during that weekend. In 2016, Juneteenth was incorporated into the celebration.

Dallas Southern Pride’s Juneteenth weekend events encompass a wide range of activities, from informative presentations by health experts to lively late-night dancing. Booths at the evening pool party provided a space for voter registration and free concert tickets for those undergoing HIV testing.

Beyond Austin, on Lake Travis, numerous individuals gathered for the Queer Black Women Alliance’s boat party, specifically held for Juneteenth. Arijah Rashid, the alliance’s founder and president, describes the festivities, which included grilling, conversations, dancing, and swimming, as an opportunity to find a supportive community and a safe space to simply be.

These combined celebrations of Pride and Juneteenth offer Black LGBTQ+ individuals a refuge, fostering a sense of unity, acceptance, and celebration. They serve as a powerful reminder that diverse communities deserve spaces where they can come together, support one another, and bask in the freedom to be their authentic selves.
