Footage Suggests U.S. Soldier Who Entered North Korea Returned to American Soil

The U.S. serviceman who dashed into North Korean territory via the intensively guarded inter-Korean border two months prior was seen arriving in the United States early on Thursday, according to available video footage.

Private Travis King’s liberation was negotiated through the cooperative efforts of both Sweden, an American ally, and China, a competitor, as confirmed by the White House on the preceding Wednesday. King was observed disembarking an aircraft in San Antonio, Texas. He was attired in what appeared to be non-military clothing and briefly interacted with individuals awaiting his arrival on the airstrip, shaking hands with one before proceeding into a nearby structure.

While the White House acknowledged the role of Sweden and China in securing King’s release, it remains unclear why North Korea—despite its strained relations with the U.S. due to disputes such as Pyongyang’s nuclear activities and backing of Russia’s military actions in Ukraine—agreed to his repatriation or what initially prompted King’s decision to defect.

King had previously been stationed in South Korea and made the unprecedented move of crossing into North Korean territory while participating in a civilian excursion to a border settlement on July 18. His actions marked him as the first American to be officially detained in North Korea in almost half a decade.

At the time of these events, King was slated to report to Fort Bliss, Texas, following his release from a South Korean prison where he had been serving time for an assault conviction.

Despite his return to the U.S., King faces a precarious legal future. He has been formally designated as Absent Without Leave (AWOL) by the U.S. Army, an offense that could lead to penalties including incarceration in a military detention facility, financial penalties, or a dishonorable discharge from service.

Last Wednesday, Swedish authorities escorted King to the Chinese border. There, he was received by Nicholas Burns, the U.S. Ambassador to China, the Swedish Ambassador to China, as well as at least one representative from the U.S. Department of Defense. Biden administration officials have vehemently stated that no concessions were made to North Korea as part of the arrangements to secure King’s freedom.

Following his departure from North Korea, King was transported to a U.S. military installation in South Korea, from where he was subsequently flown back to the United States.
