Olaf Scholz

Olaf Scholz (born June 10, 1958) is a German politician of the Social Democratic Party who has been serving as Federal Minister of Finance since 2018 and Vice Chancellor of Germany since 2019. He previously served as First Mayor and Senator for Finances in Hamburg from 2011 to 2018.

Early life and education
Scholz was born in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony. After completing his Abitur at the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium he studied law at universities in Freiburg im Breisgau, Geneva and Hamburg where he graduated with an LLM degree in 1983. In 1986 he passed his second state exam which enabled him to practice law until 1991 when he became a civil servant working for both the federal government’s Ministry of Justice office as well as that of Berlin’s Senate Department for Justice before being appointed Regional Secretary General for Legal Affairs within the European Commission’s Delegation Office in Bonn/Cologne.

Political career
