Notre Dame Fighting Irish football by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 49 The Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team represents the University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame) in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The program is currently coached by Brian Kelly and competes as an independent. The school has one claimed national championship from 1924, 13 conference championships, 45 consensus All-Americans, seven Heisman Trophy winners and boasts numerous Hall of Fame inductees. History Football at the University of Notre Dame began during the 1887 season when student George Gipp created a team to represent his university against nearby schools such as Michigan State and Purdue. In 1888 head coach William Corby took over leadership duties for the first official varsity squad which played its inaugural game on November 23rd against Kalamazoo College; a game that ended in a 6-6 tie. Over time various coaches have led teams through periods of great success including Knute Rockne who had five undefeated seasons between 1918–1930 before retiring with an impressive 105–12–5 record overall. Other notable mentors include Frank Leahy who was responsible for four National Championships during his tenure (1943, 1946 – 1949), Ara Parseghian winning two titles himself (1966 & 1973) and Lou Holtz taking home one title too in 1988 while amassing 100 wins out of 11 seasons at ND – all records that still stand today despite many changes within college football throughout history. Recent History Following Lou Holtz’s departure after 1996 season there were mixed results until current coach Brian Kelly arrived in 2010 where he instantly brought stability back to South Bend leading them to eight consecutive bowl appearances since then including three BCS bowls: Fiesta Bowl ’13/’14 Sugar Bowl ’11/’15 along with Cotton Bowl Classic this past year respectively making him only third ever ND leader behind Rockne & Leahy reach those heights so quickly into their time there . Despite early successes under Coach Kelly though recent performances have been lackluster causing some fans call for change but regardless it remains clear Fighting Irish are here stay no matter what happens next!
