NFL Football is a professional American football league composed of 32 teams split between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFL is one of the four major North American sports leagues, and its championship game, known as the Super Bowl, has become one of television’s most popular events.

The NFL was formed in 1920 as part of an agreement among several independent professional football teams that were located primarily on or near large cities with significant population bases. In 1922 it became officially recognized by Congress and changed its name to “National Football League” after being referred to informally for many years prior simply as “professional football.”

Organically grown from local rivalries into a national sport since 1933 when two separate conferences were created within the league – NFC vs AFC – each conference comprises 16 teams divided into 4 divisions: East, West South & North.
