The city stands on the Moskva River in western Russia, about 350 km (220 mi) to the southeast of Saint Petersburg. Moscow is one of the world’s largest cities and serves as an important political; economic; cultural; religious; educational; financial centre for both Europe and Asia alike. The first records mentioning Moscow date back to 1147 when Yuri Dolgoruky founded it with wooden structures near its present-day location along the Moskva River valley — hence its name which translates literally from Russian into ‘on/by/beside’ + ‘the river’. In 1610–1612 Ivan IV (‘the Terrible’) built walls around his new town that have remained intact ever since — providing a unique sense of continuity through time despite centuries worth of development within them. Since then Moscow has grown dramatically becoming Russia’s main industrial hub during Soviet times while maintaining much architectural beauty original to pre-revolutionary era days such as St Basil’s Cathedral or Red Square – arguably being two someofmost iconic landmarks this country holds dear today..
