Ukrainian drone intercepted and downed near Moscow, says Russia

The Russian defense ministry confirmed that a Ukrainian drone was intercepted and neutralized near Moscow in the early hours of Friday. This marks the third drone-based incursion attempt in the Moscow region this month.

No casualties or property damage resulted from the incident, according to the ministry. Although precise details were not provided, the drone was reportedly intercepted in the Moscow Oblast, an area encircling Moscow but not inclusive of the city.

The continual drone threats have heightened worries about Moscow’s susceptibility to assaults as the ongoing conflict enters its 18th month.

On Monday, two drones targeted the Russian capital, one of which crashed near the Defense Ministry’s headquarters along the Moscow River, approximately two miles from the Kremlin. The second drone struck a southern Moscow office building, causing extensive damage to several top floors.

In an earlier attack on July 4, the Russian military stated that four drones were intercepted and neutralized by air defense systems near Moscow, while a fifth was electronically jammed and forced to land.

The Ukrainian presidential office reported on Friday that one civilian was killed and three others were injured in the Donetsk region due to Russian offensives over the past day. Ten communities in the region were bombarded. The statement also indicated that five civilians were injured during a shelling in Novoosynove, Kharkiv region, and another in Kherson region.

The office reported that the city of Nikopol, located across the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, was targeted five times.

The Ukrainian military stated that it had seized control of the village of Staromayorske in the Donetsk region. However, the general report on the last day’s confrontations did not suggest any major progress in Ukraine’s counter-offensive against areas controlled by Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a visit to Odesa on Thursday, a crucial Black Sea port city that suffered heavy damage from Russian missile and drone attacks over the past week. The city’s historic center and iconic Orthodox cathedral were among the sites impacted. Zelenskyy inspected the cathedral and visited healthcare facilities, as per his office.
