The Missouri Tigers are the athletic teams that represent the University of Missouri, located in Columbia, Missouri. The university is a member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and competes in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The school’s mascot is Truman the Tiger and its colors are black and gold.

Established in 1890 as an all-male college, MU officially became coeducational when it took over Stowe Teachers College from nearby Harrisburg, Mo., In 1839. A few years later it began competing athletically with other colleges around the state by joining what would become known as today’s Big 12 conference. Over time they have established themselves as one of most successful collegiate programs to come out of this highly competitive conference; winning numerous number championships across all sports categories throughout their history including two national titles for football during 2007 & 2008 seasons under coach Gary Pinkel leading them to become one three universities currently holding multiple NCAA Football Championships since 2000 alongside Texas Christian University & Ohio State Univeristy .

Since becoming a part of SEC on July 1st 2012 , Mizzou has achieved tremendous success within short span claiming several team titles such as 2013 Men’s outdoor track&field championship , 2014 Women’s Outdoor Track&Field Championship along with 2015 Wrestling Championship making them first ever institution to win both men/women title at same time . Their basketball program also made deep run into tournament reaching Elite 8 twice consecutively between 2011–12 season which led former head coach Frank Haith receiving various accolades from AP Coach Of Year Award To Sporting News National Coach Of Year award while current head coach Cuonzo Martin received 2018 Naismith National Coach Of Year Award after taking his side towards Sweet 16 bracket during March Madness event 2017–18 Season
Missouri currently sponsors 19 varsity sports — 10 women’s teams and nine men’s teams — plus additional club sport offerings like rugby and lacrosse through its Student Recreation Complex facility. Its biggest rivals include fellow SEC members Arkansas Razorbacks & Kentucky Wildcats while non-conference rivalries consist Iowa Hawkeyes , Kansas Jayhawks & Illinois Fighting Illini being prominent ones among others ..
