It was admitted to the Union on December 10, 1817 as part of the Mississippi Territory. The capital and largest city is Jackson, with an estimated population of 173,514 people in 2019. Geography The Mississippi River forms its western border with Arkansas and Louisiana; it also has borders with Alabama to the east and Tennessee to the north. The Gulf Coast lies along its southern coast line which includes major cities such as Biloxi, Gulfport, Pascagoula and Bay St Louis where beach resorts are popular vacation destinations for tourists from all over North America. Its land area covers 48436 square miles (125442 km2). Major rivers that flow through or into Mississippi include Big Black River , Pearl River , Yazoo River . Its highest point is Woodall Mountain at 807 feet above sea level while its lowest point is New Orleans at 0 feet above sea level making much of low-lying areas vulnerable to flooding during hurricanes like Katrina in 2005 when large parts were submerged underwater.. Climate Most areas have hot summers with temperatures reaching up 100°F/38°C while winters can be mild but often cold enough for snowfall especially in northern regions close by Tennessee borderline though more tropical climates prevail closer towards coastline due to warmer waters coming off gulf stream currents.. An average annual rainfall ranges between 50-60 inches per year across most stateside locations hence why farming & agriculture remain mainstay industries here despite being historically known for cotton production..
