Michigan state government by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 49 Michigan State Government is the government of the U.S. state of Michigan, consisting of three branches: executive, legislative and judicial. It operates under the Constitution of Michigan and consists of several departments that serve in an administrative capacity for all levels within the state government – from local municipalities to statewide offices responsible for such areas as education, public safety and health care delivery. The structure provided by this system allows each branch to fulfill its duties without interfering with another’s responsibilities or roles in governing Michigan citizens. Executive Branch The executive branch includes elected officials who are directly accountable to voters throughout the state; they include a governor (currently Gretchen Whitmer), lieutenant governor (Garlin Gilchrist II) secretary of state (Jocelyn Benson), attorney general (Dana Nessel), treasurer (Rachael Eubanks) auditor general(Doug Ringler )and superintendentof public instruction(Michael Rice). In addition, there are numerous appointed agencies/boards including boards related to commerce & industry regulation, environmental protection management & conservation natural resources development human services tax policy veterans affairs etc All these positions have been established by statute enacted into law through legislation passed by both houses in the Legislatureand signed into lawby GovernorWhitmer . Legislative Branch The legislature is bicameral body composedof two chambers:the Senateand Houseof Representativeswhich together formsthe General Assemblyor “Legislature”. Its functionsareto considerbills introducedinto either housefor passageas statutesin order topromote bettergovernmentthroughoutthestate;overseebudgetaryprocesseswhichallocatestatefundsaccordingtopriorityneeds&appropriatelaws;establishlocalgovernmentsvotingdistrictsanddelineateboundariesfortaxpurposesetc.. Both bodies consistsof memberselectedfromconstituenciesbasedonpopulationtoservetwo-yeartermsduringregularlegislativesessionswithlimitationsonthenumbertermseachemembermayserveconsecutively based onconstitutionalguidelinesestablishedinthestate constitution .
