Louisiana’s capital city is Baton Rouge and its largest city is New Orleans. With an area of 51,843 square miles (134,382 km2), it ranks 31st among U.S. states by landmass; however, it has one of America’s longest coastlines as well as many bayous filled with wildlife throughout its interior lands rich with oil reserves and natural gas deposits that are vital for energy production nationwide. The population of Louisiana was estimated at 4,601,893 people in 2018 making it 25th most populous state overall while also having more residents than 12 other southern states combined including Alabama and Florida which rank 28th & 22nd respectively on population size within US boundaries The history of Louisianan stretches back thousands of years when Native American tribes inhabited what eventually became known as “the Pelican State” after Europeans arrived during 1682 under French explorer Robert Cavelier de La Salle who named this new territory “La Louisiane” or “Land Of Louis XIV”.
