New Orleans was engulfed by a thick blanket of smoke similar to the “super fog” incident from the previous month, causing a fatal multi-vehicle collision and the subsequent closure of Interstate 10 early on Tuesday, according to statements from local police.

Authorities had to close the interstate due to a combination of heavy fog, smoke, and several collisions, as detailed by the New Orleans Police Department on Tuesday morning.

The police reported several casualties resulting from the crash that occurred around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, with numerous individuals being transported to the hospital for treatment.

According to the National Weather Service, smoke from nearby fires is being held close to the ground by a thin atmospheric layer along Interstate 10 in eastern Orleans Parish. This condition has severely restricted visibility, allowing drivers to see only up to a quarter-mile ahead.

A dense smoke advisory was put forth by the weather service. Visibility was also significantly hindered on Interstate 55 in Louisiana due to the heavy smoke, they reported.

Details about the individual who perished on Tuesday were sparse, but the police confirmed it was a man who passed away after being taken to a hospital.

Previously on October 24, a catastrophic incident involving roughly 160 vehicles occurred on I-55 near New Orleans, attributed to a “super fog” formed by a combination of smoke from marsh fires and dense fog, resulting in the deaths of seven motorists and injuries to around two dozen.
