Libya (Arabic: ليبيا‎, Libyan Arabic: لَیْبِیّة‎ Lībyā; Berber languages: ⵍⵉⴱⵢⴰ Libya) is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad and Niger to the south, Algeria and Tunisia to the west. The three traditional parts of Tripolitania in western Libya are Cyrenaica in eastern Libya along with Fezzan further south-westward. Together they form what is known as “Historical Libya,” which covers over 1 million square kilometers including most of present day Libya. The capital city Tripoli lies at its northwest corner on an ancient Phoenician site on a rocky promontory overlooking Marsa El Kibrit Bay about 85 km (53 mi) from Tunisian border town Ras Jdir. It has been inhabited since antiquity throughout all periods due mainly to its strategic location between Europe and Africa across two seas—the Gulfs of Sidra & Gabes—with an ideal climate year round for agricultural development despite limited rainfall compared with nearby countries like Morocco or Algeria next door.

Libya has one of Africa’s longest coastlines extending more than 1 800 km (1 118 miles).
