Kevin McCarthy by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 100 Kevin McCarthy (born January 26, 1965) is an American politician who currently serves as the House Minority Leader in the United States House of Representatives. A member of the Republican Party and former Chairman of the California Republican Party, he has represented California’s 23rd congressional district since 2007. Early Life and Education: McCarthy was born in Bakersfield, California to Roberta Darlene (née Howell), a homemaker, and Owen McCarthy Jr., an assistant fire chief. He attended Cal State University – Bakersfield earning his Bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing before receiving his Masters at Pepperdine University School of Business Administration & Public Policy. Political Career: In 2000, McCarthy became chairman for then-Assemblyman Bill Maze’s campaign committee; through this experience he developed relationships which enabled him to win election as Assemblyman from 2002-2006 representing portions or all of Kern County including Tehachapi Valley Union High School District where he served on its board until 2008. After winning re-election four times by large margins within his state assembly district (which shifted due to redistricting), Kevin decided to run for Congress after incumbent Congressman William Thomas announced retirement plans upon completion of 11th term serving Californians’ interests on Capitol Hill since 1993.. In 2006 Elections he won overwhelmingly against Democratic opponent Mary Boland becoming US Representative from CA23 Congressional District succeeding retiring Member William Thomas that year . As part of freshman class elected during 110th Congress , Kevin began work immediately focusing attention primarily agriculture issues important constituents back home such farming subsidies water management policies affecting Central Valley community .
