Jackson by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 72 Jackson is the capital city of Mississippi in the United States. It is located on the Pearl River, which divides the state’s two largest cities: Jackson and Hattiesburg. The population was estimated to be 167,314 as of 2019 . History The area now known as Jackson was first settled by French colonists in 1764 when it became a trading post for fur traders from New Orleans. After changing hands numerous times during its early years, including becoming part of Spanish West Florida and then briefly becoming an independent republic before returning to US control after 1812, it officially received its current name in honor of President Andrew Jackson in 1821 following his military victory against Britain at nearby Horseshoe Bend (now Demopolis). In 1830 Mississippi achieved statehood with Jackson designated as its capital; however much like other parts of the southern states during this time period most development occurred outside what would become downtown due to issues such as yellow fever outbreaks and political unrest until after Reconstruction ended around 1880s-90s when new industries such as lumber mills began taking root within city limits leading up through World War II where manufacturing took off again thanks largely due to defense contracts given out throughout region helping create modern day skyline that still recognizable today alongside many historical buildings spread throughout neighborhood districts like Belhaven Heights Historic District or Fondren Neighborhood near Millsaps College all within close proximity each other providing variety attractions visitors enjoy while visiting here either business pleasure alike.
