Germany, officially the Federal Republic of Germany, is a federal parliamentary republic in central-western Europe. It consists of 16 constituent states, covers an area of 357,021 square kilometres (137,847 sq mi), and has a largely temperate seasonal climate. With about 82 million inhabitants as of 2019.[1] it is the most populous member state in the European Union. Its capital and largest city is Berlin. The country’s other major cities are Hamburg; Munich; Cologne; Frankfurt am Main; Stuttgart; Düsseldorf and Leipzig.[2][3] Germany is a great power with strong economic influence in Europe,[4] being home to one fourth of world’s top 500 companies[5], including many leading automotive manufacturers such as Volkswagen AG , BMW AG , Mercedes-Benz AG , Audi AG [6].

The government system comprises three branches: executive branch consisting mainly from Chancellor Angela Merkel cabinet appointed by President Joachim Gauck after national elections held every four years ; legislative branch formed by Bundestag – German Parliament–and Bundesrat – Upper House representing Länder governments interests– both elected by citizens during general election period ; judicial branch represented by Supreme Court or Federal Constitutional court responsible for guarding constitution legality against any kind infringement . In addition local self governing bodies exist at Land level that exercise all powers not specifically granted to either federal or state levels .

Germany Constitution enshrines fundamental human rights like freedom speech protection found on article 5 which also acknowledges minority language use within borders alongside official language German . Freedom religion expression can be seen reflected on Article 4 while access education health care social security benefits among others have been regulated through Social Welfare Code ratified back 1957 .
