Donetsk by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 72 Donetsk (Ukrainian: Донецьк [donetsʲk]; Russian: Доне́цк [dɐˈnʲet͡sk]) is a major city in eastern Ukraine on the Kalmius River. It is located within the Donbass region, which has been described as an “industrial heartland of Ukraine”. With a population of about 1 million people, it is one of the largest cities in Eastern Europe and serves as an important economic centre for both Ukraine and Russia. The area around Donetsk was first settled by Slavic tribes during the Middle Ages; however, its modern history began with its establishment as a coal-mining settlement in 1869. During Soviet times, Donetsk developed into an industrial hub producing machinery and chemicals while becoming home to many ethnic Russians who had moved from other parts of Ukraine or outside the country altogether. After gaining independence from USSR at 1991 Ukrainian authorities declared Donetsk regional center and gave permission to create local government body – “Donetsk Regional Council” that represents interests of all citizens living inside administrative borders under their authority. In 2014 pro-Russian separatists seized control over much of Eastern Ukraine including most part of present-day territories governed by self proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic” (DPR). City itself has remained largely under Ukrainian control since then but not without significant tensions between two sides especially after start full scale military operations conducted by Kiev forces against DPR armed stronghold Ilovaisk nearby town Kuteynikove where close quarters combat resulted numerous casualties among civilians up today.
