CFP National Championship by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 70 The College Football Playoff National Championship is an annual college football game that determines a national champion in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The championship game was first held as part of the 2014–15 bowl season, replacing the previous BCS National Championship. It is played between the winners of two pre-selected bowl games that serve as semifinal contests: The Cotton Bowl Classic and the Orange Bowl. After consultation with various stakeholders, including athletic conferences and universities within those conferences, four teams are selected to participate in a single elimination tournament for which they compete to become crowned champions. The CFP National Championship has been sponsored by several organizations since its inception; these include AT&T Stadium from 2015 to 2020 and Allstate Insurance Company from 2021 onward. A portion of revenue generated through television contracts associated with each year’s event goes directly toward funding academic scholarships at participating schools across all levels of collegiate athletics competition. Revenue generated by ticket sales also helps fund such initiatives throughout FBS programs nationwide. Attendance figures have generally increased over time; more than 84,000 fans attended both 2019’s LSU vs Clemson matchup at Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans and 2020’s Ohio State vs Alabama contest at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens respectively—both record highs for any football events hosted there priorly . Broadcast viewership however has varied drastically due largely to factors like kickoff times or matchups featured on respective years; Fox Sports reported around 28 million viewers tuned into 2017’s title match between Alabama & Georgia while ESPN reported nearly 25 million viewers watched 2018’s Clemson & Notre Dame showdown but only 17 million viewed 2019’s edition despite it being among one most highly anticipated games ever due largely its participants’ resumes entering said evening . Overall 13 different institutions have participated thus far while 3 remain undefeated having won every appearance made: Alabama ,Clemson & LSU who appeared twice winning once against Central Florida Knights during inaugural season followed up their rematch 4 seasons later when they defeated Lawrence “Trevor” Sibley led Tigers earning program their fourth overall title tying them with Crimson Tide atop leaderboards though Ducks were runners ups thrice losing consecutively on 2 occasions before finally breaking curse during 2021 installment .
