Biology is the natural science that studies life and living organisms, including their physical structure, chemical composition, function, development and evolution. Biology as a subject of inquiry dates back to ancient times; its origins can be traced to Aristotle’s writings on nature in 4th century BC Greece. In modern biology, subjects such as molecular genetics and epigenetics are at the forefront of scientific research.

The word “biology” comes from two Greek words: bios (life) and logos (study). It was first used by Karl Friedrich Burdach in 1800 when he published his book titled Physiologie vorzüglich der säugethiere und des Menschen (“Physiology Especially of Mammals and Man”).

Biological study revolves around discovering how different forms of life interact with each other within an environment or ecosystem. This includes studying both living things—such as animals, plants, fungi and bacteria—as well as non-living components like air quality or soil fertility for example. Biologists use tools from many branches of mathematics such as statistics to analyze data collected during experiments or fieldwork conducted in laboratories or out in the wilds respectively. They also often rely upon computers to simulate models which aid them in understanding topics like population dynamics more clearly.

Molecular biologists have advanced our knowledge by determining genetic sequences while evolutionary biologists try to explain why certain species exist today through examining fossils left behind over time periods spanning millions if not billions years ago on Earth’s surface! Ecologists focus mainly on interactions between living beings but may also consider environmental factors influencing populations too e..g climate change impacting migration patterns etc… Physiologists aim specifically at exploring processes occurring inside cells/organs related directly towards maintaining proper bodily functions whether it be digestion/respiration amongst others within humans & animals alike whilst biochemists delve deep into chemistry associated strongly w/ biological systems such metabolism happening throughout all organisms regardless size / complexity hierarchically speaking . Recently scientists began utilizing bioinformatics techniques making it possible for them process massive amounts data much faster than ever before thus leading uncovering new insights about various areas interest ranging anywhere plant growth hormone signaling protein folding mechanisms just mention few aspects .. All these disciplines come together form complete picture what makes up “Life” helping researchers push boundaries knowing further better understand world we live !
