This comes down to how much money the developed countries should give ones in need, as well as certain limits set on emissions. Originally this report was supposed to be ready by Friday of this week when lots of delegates met in Interlaken, Switzerland. The due date for a big report was changed many times because people from countries like China, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia all had different ideas about the exact words that should be in it. This report is important and comes from the United Nations – they’ve been collecting information on climate change since the Paris Agreement was made in 2015. A plan was accepted on Sunday, but three people that know what’s going on told Big Big News that the agreement of this plan might have to wait until a future meeting. They said it without telling names because they weren’t allowed to talk about the whole thing. This strange process wants governments to make their decisions based on a report made by experts. At the beginning of the meeting, the U.N. Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, asked people to display facts that point out there is not much time left for us to stop global warming from going up by 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit). The temperature of our world has already gone up by 1.1 degrees Celsius since the 1800s, but the leader of the United Nations (UN), Guterrres believes that it is still possible to keep it at 1.5 degrees – if every part of the economy helps reduce emissions very quickly. As global warming becomes a bigger problem, meetings where UN members talk about plans to stop it have become more and more political – just like the same kinds of meetings that are held at the end of each year. At the meeting, people are struggling with deciding which countries should get money from a special fund for climate change. They are also discussing how much pollution needs to be cut in the future and whether we should stop or continue using things that put out harmful gases. Since industries changed the way the world works, the US has been putting out more carbon dioxide than any other place. The US does not believe that it should be held responsible for climate change because of this.
