WHAT HAS CHANGED AT THE GOLDEN GLOBES?

Marking its 81st event, the Golden Globe Awards will be the inaugural major awards show of the season, now broadcast on CBS. Despite appearing familiar to viewers, the organization has experienced significant internal changes, particularly following a critical 2021 Los Angeles Times report. This investigation highlighted the absence of Black members in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the body responsible for the awards’ voting.

In response to this revelation, celebrities and production companies boycotted the Globes, and NBC declined to broadcast the 2022 ceremony. However, after the HFPA incorporated journalists of diverse backgrounds and made other ethical reforms, the awards returned in January 2023 under a one-year probationary contract with NBC, which was not renewed thereafter.

In June, billionaire Todd Boehly received approval to transform the HFPA into a for-profit organization. His company, Eldridge Industries, acquired the Golden Globes, along with dick clark productions, a subsidiary of Penske Media, which owns Variety, Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, Rolling Stone, and Billboard. CBS announced in mid-November that it would broadcast the ceremony on January 7, also available on Paramount+.

Historically, the Golden Globe Awards were a major fixture in awards season, second only to the Oscars.

They were known for their categories in film and television — including best picture and best director, with an emphasis on high-profile actors — thus avoiding lengthy speeches by lesser-known industry figures.

However, the HFPA, comprising around 87 members, had considerable influence and often received extravagant gifts and trips from studios seeking favorable outcomes in the awards. On occasion, the HFPA was criticized for nominating big-star films with poor reviews, the most notorious example being “The Tourist,” starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. In recent years, their selections have more frequently aligned with the Oscars.

Prior to the exposé and ensuing crisis, the industry largely overlooked the HFPA’s voting process. The Golden Globes were an integral part of Hollywood’s awards ecosystem, a launchpad for Oscar contenders, and a consistent draw for viewers. In 2019, nearly 19 million viewers tuned in, though the 2023 NBC broadcast saw a record low of 6.3 million viewers.
