Scientists Reversing Warning as Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcanic Activity Stops

Scientists said that Hawaii’s second-largest volcano, Kilauea, is not erupting at the moment. They also said that the ground shaking and movements have stopped and no lava has been seen at the surface. However, they warned that it could erupt again with little or no warning in the near future.

The agency said something called a ‘shallow earthquake storm’ indicated that an eruption of Kilauea Volcano, known to be one of the world’s most active volcanoes, was likely soon. Just recently this volcano stopped flowing after lasting for 61 days. In 2018, it caused destruction to more than 700 houses when it erupted. Around the same time, Mauna Loa on Hawaii’s Big Island also erupted for about two weeks.

Two of Hawaii’s biggest volcanos suddenly went off at the same time and this made tourism increase during the quiet season.

Native Hawaiians have a strong connection to the volcanos, so when Mauna Loa erupted in November after lying still for 38 years, they sang special songs, danced and even left presents to honor Pele – the goddess of volcanoes and fire.
