Rep. Jim Jordan Pursues House Speakership Again Amid Declining GOP Support

Despite mounting resistance within his party, Rep. Jim Jordan is poised to make a third bid for the role of Speaker of the House. His Republican peers have openly cautioned the staunch Trump supporter that additional attempts to sway their votes through threats or promises are unlikely to yield a different outcome.

As the House plans to reconvene on Friday, Republicans remain without a feasible strategy to consolidate their divided majority, elect a new Speaker, and resume congressional duties which have been on hold since the removal of Kevin McCarthy from the role earlier in the month. Jordan has arranged for a press conference prior to Friday’s session.

Jordan’s third endeavor to secure the Speaker’s gavel is predicted to fare no better than his previous attempts. Notably, moderate Republicans are increasingly turning against him due to aggressive strategies aimed at garnering their votes, including reported incidents of harassment and death threats.

Jordan remains steadfast, stating, “I am still in the running for Speaker and intend to secure the necessary votes to win this race.”

However, more than a fortnight has passed in the political deadlock that has effectively paralyzed the House of Representatives, casting a shadow over American governance during a period of both domestic and international challenges. The Republican majority in the House seems at a loss as to how to move beyond the current stalemate.

Following a meeting late on Thursday, Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., noted that Jordan simply does not have sufficient support for his Speaker bid, with some members even urging him to withdraw from the race.

A proposal to temporarily augment the powers of the interim Speaker pro tempore, Rep. Patrick McHenry, was promptly dismissed by Jordan’s far-right allies. Jordan had previously endorsed the plan as a temporary measure to give him more time to gather support.

The future steps remain uncertain. There are forecasts of an ongoing closure for the House, possibly until the Congressional funding deadline in mid-November. Veteran legislator Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., articulated the Republican dilemma, stating, “We are attempting to discover if a Republican-only solution exists,” adding that their majority has proven itself to be abnormal.

The prospect of Jordan attaining the Speaker’s role seems to be diminishing. Following an initial failed vote, Jordan lost additional support in the subsequent ballot. Many within the party consider him too radical for such a pivotal role in U.S. governance.

The deadlock reveals a Republican majority that is currently incapable of securing the 217 votes needed to elect a new Speaker, despite holding a 221-212 majority in the House. Internal Republican discussions have escalated into heated exchanges, with factions blaming one another for the current chaos.

Any notion of expanding McHenry’s powers as a potential solution was complicated by Republicans’ reluctance to collaborate with Democrats and by hardliners’ own aversions to the idea. McHenry himself has declined permanent offers for the Speaker role, emphasizing his intention to operate within the constitutional and House rules.

Kevin McCarthy, who had chosen McHenry for the temporary role, noted that he was looking for “someone who could work with all sides. And McHenry is ideal for all that.”

In an attempt to muster support, Jordan had counted on the endorsement of Donald Trump and pressure from various groups on the rank-and-file members. However, these tactics seemed to have backfired.

Jordan, who has been in office since 2006 with few legislative accomplishments, also faces questions surrounding his past. He has vehemently denied allegations from his tenure as an assistant wrestling coach at Ohio State University, where he was accused of being aware of sexual misconduct by a university doctor. Jordan maintains that he was never privy to such abuse.
