Yet, it was the extensive loss to the village itself, where a significant proportion of the population is either deceased or unaccounted for, that became the focus of his eulogy. “As a lively and vibrant community, this place was teeming with greenery, wildlife, and children enjoying their freedom,” Butler conveyed on Thursday, amid the backdrop of looted residences and vehicles riddled with bullet holes, all under an atmosphere heavy with the stench of mortality. Homes were set ablaze with residents still inside, recounted Butler, a father of three who himself had been engaged in an hours-long shootout with militants on October 7. “Those who did manage to escape were either kidnapped, mercilessly killed, or executed. The scale of the atrocity defies comprehension.” Nir Oz is just one among over 20 settlements in southern Israel that were targeted in a widespread attack initiated by Hamas from the conflict-stricken Gaza Strip. Despite the extensive damage in many of these locations, it is manifest that this kibbutz, located on a hillock overlooking the border fence with Gaza, has endured an exceptionally grim impact. Journalists were guided through the ravaged village on Thursday by members of the Israeli military and two surviving residents, including a reporter from Big Big News. Before the incursion, the village was inhabited by approximately 400 people who were mainly involved in agriculture and a local manufacturing facility focused on paint and sealants. Nestled amidst the arid expanse of the Negev desert, the community boasted a botanical garden with over 900 species of flora. Now, it stands almost entirely emptied of its once-vibrant community. Authorities continue the grim task of identifying the deceased. According to residents, nearly a quarter of the village population fell prey to the assault. Over two dozen fatalities have been confirmed, with dozens more suspected to be among the roughly 200 individuals taken as hostages to Gaza. Recently, the Israeli military disclosed what it claims to be a militant handbook detailing procedures for hostage-taking. The guide allegedly recommends burning tires in front of fortified metal doors built into many Israeli residences to force people out. While the authenticity of the manual has not been independently verified, its tactics have not been confirmed to have been employed by the estimated 200 militants who infiltrated Nir Oz. In total, approximately 100 inhabitants from Nir Oz are either dead or missing, reports Ron Bahat, 57, a lifelong resident of the kibbutz. Bahat recalls how militants made multiple attempts to breach the fortified room where he and his family had sought refuge during the onslaught. “Through concerted effort, we managed to secure the door and windows and thus survived,” he stated. Signs of abruptly terminated lives are omnipresent in the village. While ceiling fans still turn in some demolished homes and an assortment of toys lie abandoned in front yards, such remnants are starkly juxtaposed by extensive destruction. Close to a pine grove, almost 20 cars stand with shattered windows and orange spray-painted Arabic words for ‘Palestine’. Trails of blood wind through homes, leading to fortified rooms, in some cases adjacent to toppled baby cribs. Although some survivors intend to return eventually, the Nir Oz they knew no longer exists, both Butler and Bahat admit. “We devoted ourselves to cultivating these fields, always clinging to the hope for a peaceful future with our neighbors,” said Butler. “That vision was challenging to maintain even when rocket sirens would blare warnings of incoming fire from Gaza. But now, the dream seems almost impossible to hold onto.” Contributions were made to this article by Big Big News reporter Adam Geller, reporting from New York.
