Bombing at Event Commemorating Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday Results in 21 Fatalities in Pakistan’s Southwest Region

A devastating explosion took place near a mosque during a gathering to honor the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad in the southwestern region of Pakistan this past Friday. The incident resulted in a minimum of 21 casualties and left over 50 individuals injured, according to statements from law enforcement and government officials.

The incident transpired in the district of Mastung, situated in the province of Baluchistan, as confirmed by the government administrator, Atta Ullah. Emergency medical aid was dispatched, and the injured were taken to adjacent medical facilities; several are reported to be in critical condition.

Among the deceased was a high-ranking police official, Mohammad Nawaz, revealed Atta Ullah. Law enforcement authorities are in the process of ascertaining whether the explosion was the result of a suicide attack.

Muslims both within Pakistan and globally observe the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad, commonly referred to as Mawlid an-Nabi, through public events. The festivities often include the distribution of complimentary meals to attendees.

The incident follows a recent advisory from authorities requesting heightened vigilance from the police force, warning that militant groups might target gatherings celebrating the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad.

The acting Interior Minister, Sarfraz Bugti, vehemently condemned the attack and conveyed his condolences, labeling the act as “heinous” for targeting individuals participating in the Mawlid an-Nabi procession.

In recognition of Prophet Muhammad’s birth anniversary, the government had announced a national holiday. President Arif Alvi and acting Prime Minister Anwaarul-haq-Kakar, in separate statements, had urged unity and adherence to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad.

While no group immediately came forward to claim responsibility for the act, the Pakistani Taliban, formally known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), promptly dissociated themselves from the incident. TTP is distinct but closely aligned with the Afghan Taliban, which assumed control of neighboring Afghanistan in August 2021 amid the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces after two decades of conflict.

Prior lethal attacks in Baluchistan and other areas have been attributed to the Islamic State group. The resource-rich province of Baluchistan, which shares its borders with Afghanistan and Iran, has been the backdrop of a subdued insurgency led by Baluch nationalists for over two decades. Originally aimed at securing a fair distribution of provincial resources, the insurgency later evolved to demand full independence.
