Xavier Becerra

Xavier Becerra (born January 26, 1958) is an American politician serving as the 33rd and current Attorney General of California since 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, he was a U.S. Representative from California’s 34th congressional district from 1993 to 2017 before being appointed attorney general by Governor Jerry Brown in December 2016 to succeed Kamala Harris after she was elected United States Senator for California in November 2016.

Early life and education
Becerra was born on January 26, 1958 in Sacramento, California and raised there until his family moved to Los Angeles when he was 4 years old. He attended local Roman Catholic schools including Salesian High School where he graduated at age 16 as valedictorian of his class and went on to attend college at Stanford University where he earned his Bachelor’s degree with honors in 1980; followed by a Juris Doctorate degree from Stanford Law School three years later. After law school graduation Becerra worked for six months doing volunteer legal services work before taking up private practice working with clients who were disabled or otherwise unable to obtain legal representation due to financial hardship or language barriers among other issues faced by minority communities throughout Southern California during the early 1980s leading into the mid-1990s prior moving onto politics full time late that decade onward..

Political career In 1990 Xavier ran unsuccessfully against incumbent State Assemblyman Art Torres but then won election two years later representing Congressional District 31 which covered most of East LA neighborhoods while also encompassing parts neighboring cities such as Montebello & unincorporated places like Florence-Graham within South Central LA County area just outside City limits becoming first Latino Congressman elected out West side Greater Los Angeles region all way back 1992; following re-districting process 2002 resulted him getting reassigned represent newly formed CA34 covering much same territory albeit slightly expanded southward include Vernon & Huntington Park wihtin City Limits itself . During this period over next 14+ yrs served various roles Capitol Hill including Chairing Steering Committee House Democratic Caucus 2003–2007 Ranking Member Ways Means Cmte 2009–2011 Vice Chair Democratic Conference 2012 -2017 ultimately culminating appointment US Ambassador Trade Representative 2014 under Obama Administration helping conclude Trans Pacific Partnership negotiations 2015 though latter not ratified Congress 2019 amid President Trump withdrawing country trade deal earlier year 2018 shortly entering office same month Jan 20th amidst strong public outcry both domestically internationally had been growing TPP passage considered foregone conclusion given bipartisan support it initially enjoyed establishment Beltway Washington DC circles alike even many labor unions endorsing agreement well despite concerns environmental groups regarding potential negative impacts global climate change further down line posed if passed would be too great risk take without proper safeguards place ensure those effects mitigated minimized extent possible .
