He also didn’t say no to the idea of refusing to follow what the court ruling would demand if need be. President Joe Biden’s health secretary, Xavier Becerra, told CNN’s “State of the Union” that he wants to challenge a reckless decision in court and make sure that women still have access to a safe drug. Millions of women have used this drug all over the world. A federal judge in Texas, chosen by President Donald Trump, recently gave women the right for one week to use abortion medication called mifepristone. This was allowed because the Food and Drug Administration (under the Health and Human Services Department led by Becerra) approved it since 2000. The person said that they have to win this fight “for America’s sake and for women’s sake”. Biden has said his government will try to overturn a Texas ruling. This ruling was 67 pages long and gave the government one week to make an appeal. Becerra said they want everybody to have access to mifepristone, which is used for women’s healthcare (especially abortion care). He said it’s one of the safest and most effective medicines in the last 20 years. When asked if he would suggest that the FDA pay no attention to a law, Becerra said “Everything is possible.” There is doubt about whether people will be able to use the most common type of abortion in the USA because two different courts gave different legal opinions about mifepristone. Kacsmaryk said that the federal government shouldn’t approve this drug called “mifepristone”. But, Judge Thomas O. Rice from Washington State told the U.S. authorities not to take actions which will block people from getting access to this medicine in 17 states where Democrats started a legal battle to keep it easily available. Becerra said that Kacsmaryk’s order could have horrible consequences for the legality of any drugs approved by the FDA, like vaccines, insulin and new Alzheimer’s medications. He acknowledged there is a good chance that this case might end up in the Supreme Court, who last year made changes to laws about abortions across America. The speaker said that if a judge does not use the opinion of medical professionals and scientists when making decisions about drugs, people might have to go to court to challenge it. The Cabinet secretary was referring to Kacsmaryk when he said that what happened in one judge’s court in one state doesn’t represent America. He continued by saying that evidence is needed to show what’s fair and transparent, and that we all must do the right things for the right reasons. Rep. Tony Gonzales, who went on CNN after Becerra, said that it’s important to take good care of women and have a proper discussion about their health problems, but he suggested getting away from the talk about abortion. According to him, there are far more issues than just abortion that should be discussed in the world.
