Virginia Tech Hokies

The Virginia Tech Hokies are the collegiate athletic teams of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), located in Blacksburg, Virginia. The university’s intercollegiate competitive sports teams form an integral part of student life at the school. The Hokies compete in 23 varsity sports as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Founded with men’s basketball and football programs in 1892, it is one of six schools that competes as a Division I FBS independent. It has been affiliated with several conferences over its history including: Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (1898-1922); Big South Football League (1996–2000); Metro Conference/Conference USA for most other sports from 1983 to 2004; Big East for some non-football sports from 2005 to 2012; ACC since July 1, 2004; and NCAA Division I since 1952.

The mascot for all sport teams is “HokieBird”, which was created by former head coach Frank Beamer when he came to VT during 1987 season. Its official colors are Chicago Maroon & Burnt Orange, though there have also been variations such as burnt yellow & old gold or navy blue & orange used throughout different eras of athletics program’s history depending on what conference they were competing within each given year(s). As well – athletes often wear white helmets w/ either maroon or orange accents while playing football games home or away accordingly too!

In addition to winning numerous individual championships across various events held annually around campus grounds – team wise? Well their biggest successes come primarily via Men’s Basketball where they won both tournament NIT titles consecutively back during 1995-96 seasons followed up shortly thereafter capturing first outright regular season crown just two years later 1998 before eventually reaching pinnacle success again more recently 2007 when squad managed advance into Final Four round action only losing out narrowly after 2nd half OT against eventual national champion Kansas Jayhawks 73–75… As far as Women’s side goes however? They haven’t done nearly quite so much although still found relative moderate success here winning four WNIT tournaments between 1992 through 2006 respectively despite never qualifying any NCAA tourneys yet unfortunately until 2018 edition marked breakthrough run deep into “Big Dance” further than ever before prior this point time frame seemed cap off incredible campaign ultimately bowing quarterfinals tilt Minnesota Gophers 86–95 finale ending hopes repeating feat following academic year 2019 once COVID pandemic struck putting halt college hoops everywhere worldwide… Even then though same sentiment cannot be said regarding Football Program whose own rich tradition field dates way back 1890′ whence began building strong foundation build upon today becoming perennial powerhouse competitors every single decade henceforth capped off recent streak appearances consecutive bowl games 21 straight times running now current 2021 standing proud atop nation rankings amongst others positionally speaking!
