U.S. Department of Justice by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 61 The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) is the executive branch department responsible for upholding federal law, administering justice, and protecting the rights of individuals. The DOJ was established in 1870 as a part of President Ulysses S. Grant’s efforts to combat fraud and corruption during Reconstruction following the Civil War. It has since grown into one of the largest departments within the government with more than 115,000 employees across 94 offices nationwide. The head official at DOJ is known as an Attorney General appointed by the President from among their Cabinet members or other qualified individuals upon Senate approval. Since its inception over 150 attorneys general have held this office including notable figures such as Robert F Kennedy who served under John F Kennedy and Janet Reno who served under Bill Clinton . The current attorney general is Merrick Garland having been appointed by Joe Biden on March 11 2021 after his confirmation hearings before both houses of Congress were successful . As part of its mission to “ensure public safety against foreign and domestic threats” , it works closely with local governments , non-governmental organizations , state/federal agencies , tribal nations & international partners to prosecute criminals while also promoting civil rights enforcement throughout America .
