Tripoli by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 83 Tripoli (Arabic: طرابلس Ṭarābulus; Berber languages: Oea, or Wy’t) is the capital city and the largest city of Libya. Situated in the northwest of Libya along the coast of Gulf of Sidra on a point of rocky land projecting into the Mediterranean Sea, Tripoli was founded by Phoenicians from Tyre in 705 BC and served as one of their most important trading posts for centuries afterwards. It has since been ruled by numerous empires including Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Ottomans and Italians before gaining independence with Libyan monarchy in 1951. In 2011 it became part of an area known as Greater Tripoli which covers almost 200 square miles (500 km2). With an estimated population over 2 million people (April 2020 census), it is also home to many communities such as African migrants who worked there during Italian colonial rule. The old town center features narrow winding alleys lined with small shops leading towards lively open-air markets selling everything from traditional food items like olives to modern electronics goods shipped from abroad. The Medina neighborhood has remained largely unchanged since its founding days due to conservation efforts made by government authorities while other parts have seen rapid development adding high rises buildings that stretch out along shorelines offering breathtaking views overlooking sea ports below them where large cargo ships come unload their shipments brought here for distribution around North Africa region. Other popular attractions include Red Castle Museum located inside castle walls built between 12th & 14th century AD containing various artifacts related to history this ancient town plus numerous mosques scattered throughout showing off beautiful Islamic architecture styles unique only found within these parts country side making trip very memorable experience visitors travelers alike!
