It is bordered by Louisiana to the east, Oklahoma to the north, New Mexico to the west and Mexico to the south. Texas has an area of 268,820 square miles (696,241 km2), making it one of the largest states in terms of landmass within North America. With a population estimated at 29 million as of 2020, Texas is also among the most populous US states. The earliest known inhabitants were Native American tribes such as Apache and Comanche who lived along rivers like Rio Grande and Pecos River thousands years before European settlement began during colonial times; Spanish explorers first arrived during 16th century with France briefly claiming parts near present-day Sabine Pass until they abandoned their claims following defeat from Spain’s allies in 1719 Treaty Of Paris ending War Of Quadruple Alliance between England/France/Habsburg Austria/Savoy . Following Mexican independence from Spain 1821 territories that would become modern day state including Coahuila y Tejas joined newly formed country but was annexed into US after victory over them in 1836 Texan Revolution & subsequent annexation treaty 2 years later leading up formation Republic Of Texas which lasted for decade prior being admitted into union December 29th 1845 becoming 28th U.S State officially joining confederacy 1861 when Civil War broke out though voted remain part Union doing so caused much tension amongst local population thus causing secession go ahead despite voting majority against leaving nation ultimately lead end war 1865 post Reconstruction era period followed where African Americans granted full civil rights In addition its geography , Texans have distinct culture compared rest continental 48 States due mix different influences throughout history particularly strong cowboy heritage combined with traditional Latin American roots cuisine popularized state resulting what often referred Lone Star Cuisine When comes music genres associated various regions goes beyond standard Country Western there Blues Zydeco Norteno Conjunto Cumbia Mariachi even Rap Hip Hop styles all having large fan base areas cities across region Economy wise agriculture mining petroleum industry are major components driving force behind GDP growth while technology especially Austin Silicon Hills creates job market opportunities today more than ever before Tourism another important sector people visit take advantage natural sites attractions like Big Bend National Park Hill Country Space Center Houston Grand Canyon Dallas Cowboys stadium etc Regardless weather politics economy or sheer size one thing sure about great State Texas proud be called home by millions each year
