Taiwan by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 65 Taiwan, officially the Republic of China (ROC), is an island country located off the southeastern coast of mainland China, in East Asia and across the Taiwan Strait. The main island of Taiwan has an area of 35,808 square kilometers (13,826 sq mi) and a population estimate of over 23 million people as at 2017. It also encompasses various other islands including Green Island and Orchid Island to its east. The ROC government currently administers all these territories but only Mainland areas such as Fujian Province are considered part of “China” by most international organizations since 1949 when both sides split after Chinese Civil War between Kuomintang-led ROC government and Communist Party led People’s Republic Of China(PRC). Taiwan is known for being one of four Asian Tigers with high economic growth during late 20th century due to industrialization efforts made by former authoritarian leader Chiang Kai-shek , father founder current president Tsai Ing-wen . Its economy focuses on technology development nowadays while maintaining human rights standards that have been praised internationally .
