Syria government by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 52 Syria is a country in the Middle East, and it has been ruled by an authoritarian government since 1963. The current Syrian government was established following a coup d’état led by Hafez al-Assad in 1970. Al-Assad remained president until his death in 2000 and was succeeded by his son Bashar al-Assad who remains the president of Syria today. The Syrian Arab Republic is based on a semi-presidential system with legislative power vested in its unicameral legislature, the People’s Council of Syria (Majlis Sha’b Suriya). Executive authority lies with both President Assad and Prime Minister Imad Khamis, who heads up the Cabinet which consists mostly of members loyal to Assad’s Baath Party. The Baath party maintains control over most aspects of national policy including security forces such as intelligence services, military branches like air force & navy as well as foreign affairs & domestic economic policies while other political parties are not allowed any real influence or power within politics or society at large. The economy is heavily state controlled through numerous public sector enterprises & subsidies for food items; however due to international sanctions imposed against Syria during 2011 – 2017 period due to civil war there had been significant decline leading to inflationary crisis thereby making life difficult for majority population without access means sufficiently stable income sources . This resulted from decrease investments from overseas investors amid fears uncertainty related future developments . Despite this situation , Government continually invested resources into multiple areas such defense infrastructure projects creating limited employment opportunities but still providing overall relief nation suffering mass unemployment rates poor living standards among citizens . Over recent years human rights organisations have reported widespread abuses committed largely under direction/ supervision Federal Security Directorate (FSD) commonly known Mukhabarat – secret police agency that works report directly President himself along his close associates gather information about potential dissenters activities considered threatening stability regime . Furthermore lack freedom expression press censorship implemented ensure only official version history events disseminated general public leaving no room debate opposition viewpoints thus preventing formation organised movements capable challenging authority authorities hold people down autocratic rule they impose them .”
