It is composed of 14 member institutions located primarily in the southeastern United States, with one additional full member institution located in Texas and two affiliate members from Missouri and South Carolina. The SEC was formed on December 8th, 1932 as a result of the reorganization of several predecessor conferences that had been founded during the late 19th century.
