Pittsburgh by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 71 Pittsburgh is the second-largest city in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, and its metropolitan area has a population of 2.3 million people. Located at the confluence of three rivers—the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio—as well as many smaller tributary streams that flow through it’s neighborhoods, Pittsburgh was founded by British General John Forbes in 1758 during the French & Indian War era to protect settlers from danger posed by Native American raids. It rose to prominence with the expansion of coal mining operations beginning in 1820s when local entrepreneur George Woods opened his first mine along Little Saw Mill Run Creek near what is now Southside Flats neighborhood . The city quickly became an important steelmaking center due to its proximity to abundant natural resources such as iron ore deposits discovered along nearby hillsides while transporting supplies downriver on rafts made out wooden logs – this resulted in over 10 mills being built throughout downtown area which produced almost one third world’s total output at peak production times (1880–1920). Pittsburghers experienced difficult economic conditions following decline industry sector starting mid 1970’s resulting closure most plants; however revitalization efforts since 1980 have given rise numerous new businesses centered around healthcare technology/software development biomedical research making Pittsburgh once again major player global economy today!
