Philadelphia is the largest city in Pennsylvania and the sixth-most populous city in the United States, with an estimated population of 1.5 million people as of 2018. It is located along the Delaware River midway between New York City and Washington D.C., making it a major economic hub for both cities. The city was founded by William Penn during British colonization in 1682, making it one of America’s oldest large cities; its rich history can be seen today through dozens of historical sites throughout Philadelphia’s cobblestone streets.

The economy of Philadelphia has been historically based on manufacturing, most notably petroleum refining and shipbuilding from 1880 to 1950; however, recent decades have seen diversification into healthcare, biotechnology, finance services, education industries among other sectors that now employ nearly 30% of all Philadelphians within their respective fields.
