Oregon

Oregon is a coastal state located in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It borders Washington to the north, Idaho to the east, California to the south and Nevada on its southeast corner. Oregon has an area of 98,381 square miles making it slightly larger than Japan and just under twice as large as Great Britain. The capital city is Salem which also happens to be one of seven cities with population over 100000 inhabitants (the others being Portland, Eugene, Gresham, Hillsboro Beaverton and Bend).

The land that would become Oregon was first settled by Native Americans who lived there for thousands of years before white settlers arrived in 1805. In 1843 it became part of a joint American-British territory called “Oregon Country” until becoming fully American again in 1846 following ratification from both sides after negotiations through treaty agreements known collectively as “The Oregon Treaties”. This agreement provided British citizens living there at the time full rights but granted no title or claim over any lands they may have occupied priorly.

In February 14th 1859 Oregon became an official US State while maintaining much autonomy via their own constitution written two years earlier (1857) where direct democracy still plays an important role today; all bills passed must go through approval by public referendum if requested so within 90 days after passing them into law otherwise they simply expire without taking effect whatsoever – making this yet another unique feature not found anywhere else across America!

Oregon’s diverse geography includes mountains such as Mt Hood which stands 11239 ft tall near Portland metropolitan area; deserts like Alvord desert situated towards southeastern corner between Burns & Frenchglen townships respectively along with parts covered by lush forests filled with various wildlife species like bald eagles owls deer etc..
