North Korea government by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 41 North Korea, officially the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), is a single-party state governed by a totalitarian dictatorship led by the Korean Workers’ Party (KWP). The KWP has been in power since its establishment in 1948 and is headed by chairman Kim Jong-un. North Korea’s government follows an ideology of Juche, which was established under President Kim Il Sung and emphasizes self-reliance and economic independence from other countries. This ideology has influenced all aspects of life within North Korea including politics, economy, culture, education and foreign policies. The Supreme Leader of North Korea holds ultimate authority over all matters relating to governance in the country while there are several institutions that help him implement policy decisions such as the National Defence Commission (NDC) which acts as his advisory body on military issues; Cabinet consisting ministers responsible for running domestic affairs; Presidium governing legislative functions; Central Court overseeing judicial system; State Security Department monitoring internal security threats among others. Although elections do take place at local levels for members to serve on provincial people’s committees or municipal assemblies these contests lack any real competition as only one candidate representing KWP stands for election due to strict control over political activities exercised through various repressive measures employed by government authorities like arbitrary arrest & detention without trial along with censorship & propaganda machinery used to suppress dissenters within society. In terms of foreign relations DPRK maintains cordial ties with China & Russia but remains hostile towards South Korea especially after 2017 when spats between two sides increased following installation of THAAD missile defense system near US base located south side border region leading it impose sanctions against Pyongyang regime citing its nuclear weapons program coupled with human rights violations occurring inside nation being main reasons behind move . Despite this DPRK continues maintain diplomatic presence around world having embassies numerous countries many them traditionally friendly nations like Cuba Syria Vietnam etc .
