The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the Bronx borough of New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The Yankees have won 27 World Series championships, more than any other MLB franchise and 40 AL pennants, both records for any North American pro sports team.

Founded in 1901 by Frank Farrell and Bill Devery, two former National League owners who had been forced out by John T. Brush’s Giants’ monopoly on Manhattan-based teams, the franchise was christened with its current name after purchasing Baltimore Orioles player contracts from 1902 to 1904. Since then they have played their home games at Yankee Stadium since 2009; previously they played at old Yankee Stadium from 1923–1973 and 1976–2008 while Shea Stadium hosted them during 1974–1975 due to renovations being done on Yankee Stadium following its 1973 closure. Among active franchises across all major professional sports leagues operating today, only three US-based clubs—the Chicago Bears (NFL), Boston Bruins (NHL), Los Angeles Kings (NHL)—have longer histories than that of the Yankees’.
